Sungai Petani, KEDAH
Background
Sungai Petani (abbreviated "Sg. Petani" or "SP") is a town in the state of Kedah, in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. It is the largest town and the largest residential area in Kedah.
SP is located about 35km from Penang. This place is also the largest industrial area near Penang which is the third largest city in Malaysia after Johor Bahru. If you are heading north and prefer to stay somewhere in between Penang and Alor Setar, Sungai Petani could be the right place for you to stay
SP has an iconic landmark known as Clock tower which is located on the main street of Jalan Ibrahim. This 12m high clock tower is built in 1936 as a gift to commemorate the reign of His Majesty King George V by entrepreneur and philantropist Lim Lean Teng.

There are several options eg Kompleks Galeri Bakau Jeti Semeling Merbok (Mangrove Gallery Complex)- a jetty complex with foods and beverages restaurant, mini museum , and a 1km long walkaway thru the mangrove natural habitats along Sungai Merbok.
Take a boat ride along Merbok river to explore about 30 different species of mangrove grown on Malaysia's largest reserved mangrove forest and about 80 species of rare birds habitats. The edge of Sungai Merbok consisting an area of 4,114 square hectare which is among one of the largest reserves for sea mangrove area in Malaysia.

Transportation
Sungai Petani is easily (and most practically) accessible using the North-South Expressway. From Kuala Lumpur heading north or Alor Setar as stated on most of the signage till u see the signage for Sungai Petani after about 400 kilometers journey from Kuala Lumpur city.
For whom travels from Penang, there is a Rapid bus from Penang (Butterworth) which takes around 45-60 minutes of travelling time.
While within SP area, grab a public transport system - Cityliner/Mara Bus to explore the beauty of SP. Other options are by foot or taxi/chartered cab.
